Rainwater Harvesting System Rebate

In an effort to encourage water conservation the City of Sunset Valley is offering a financial incentive to homeowners that install large rainwater harvesting systems (greater than 500 gallons).   The system must be capable of capturing the first inch of rain for the first 1000 square feet of roof catchement area and half an inch of the second 1000 square feet of roof catchement area. In general 0.6 gallons per square foot of roof per inch of rain can be collected from your roof catchement area.   For example a house with 2,000 square feet of roof catchment area would need to have storage facility for approximately 900 gallons of water.

The rebate for Rainwater Harvesting is:

First $500.00 -                       100%

Above $500.00 -                     50% up to $3000.00

Total Rebate Available per household:   $3,500

The rebate covers the cost of gutters/downspouts, leaf screens and roof washers, cisterns or storage tanks, conveyance systems, and water treatment systems.  System requirements will depend on whether the water will be used for potable or non—potable purposes.  Homes with metal, slate or clay roofs can collect water for potable purposes.  Other roof types can only use collected water for irrigation purposes.

-       A pre-inspection must be completed before being approved for a rebate.

-       System must collect a minimum of 300 gallon and be able to store one inch of rainfall based on roof catchment area.  Most homes will need to collect at least 900 gallons of water.

-       The system should last for a minimum of 20 years.

-       Tank specifications must be included in application.

-       Tanks should be UV resistant or enclosed/painted.

-       Rebates will be issued after the system is installed and inspected by a Public Works representative and a final cost report submitted.

-       Approved Building Permit.
