Firewise Day, June 23, 2012
On June 23, 2012, Sunset Valley held a Firewise Day. The event was planned to be both ceremony and awareness; to celebrate the efforts of the City of Sunset Valley’s recognition as a Firewise Community and to educate the public on wildfire mitigation and preparedness activities.

The activities included: Firewise Recognition. The Director of the Texas Forest Service and members of the Austin Fire Department Command staff recognized the City and the Firewise Committee for their efforts to gain recognition status; Firewise Landscaping with Adams Kirkpatrick. Adams Kirkpatrick lead a demonstration on Firewise Landscaping - methods to prepare and protect your home and property from wildfire. Chainsaw Demonstration. How to safely operate a chainsaw, properly maintain your trees, and get your property ready for wildfire; and Emergency Preparedness. How best to prepare you and your family in an emergency. Just for fun Portable Adrenaline, an Austin based company, brought a climbing wall.

To help with education, the City built an Ember House, a fun interactive demonstration of vulnerable spaces and items around your home where wildfire embers can gather and ignite your property; and,  Ready, Set, Go Activity
A time management activity that helps families understand the value of making a plan before an emergency happens.  You will only have a few minutes to get out, what will you take with you.

Last, we had Austin Fire Department and Texas Forest Service Firefighting Equipment and Crews.
